the every day suit

just got a little nicer

I’ve been impressed by JCrew’s move toward a higher quality product in virtually all areas of it’s offerings. While I’ve always found their suiting to be of pretty good quality for a retail store – i’ve typically been more inclined to shop higher end suits with a bit more attention to cut and tailoring. Recently however I took a minute to try on a couple of their now famous “Ludlow” suits in cotton chino, japanese linen and Italian wool. I’ve got to admit – I am really really impressed with the quality of the cut on all of these suits. The italian wool did pucker a bit and could use a bit more stretch in the fit – but given the price point at under $600.00 it was still a nice option. The other two styles I really had no issues. The materials used appeared to be of truly high quality, the construction was clearly well done and the fit – oh that fit- was just slim enough without looking ridiculous with breaks at the cuff that felt modern and cool. I liked them so much that I even bought the dark grey cotton chino version as it will be an awesome option for both every day work as a suit – and also as separates for those business trips where business casual is the dress du jour. I definitely recommend.

KELLY WEARSTLER COVET SILVER SCREW KEY PENDANT

BUY HERE.

They are all the rage. Keys. Wrap one around your neck and let the compliments pour in. I like this trend because it reminds me of my mother’s vintage diamond key she got in the 1980s. It was so spectacular – still is – and she doesn’t even know it. She’d wear it with a cocktail dress and I’d watch it rock back and forth like a pendulum. It was, it is, magnificent. Thank goodness for old trends becoming new trends… and for my ability to raid my mother’s closet from time to time. Don’t have a family piece you can borrow, try one of these on for size.

Why you should tone it down after 30

I’ve got two words for you: Man Boobs.

It’s the truth that none of your wives or partners are telling you. Men of our generation were among the first of our gender to experience a phenomenon that I call the Vogue-ization of man. In our most influenced years we watched as Male Models became objects of desire – buffed up, waxed, plucked and perfected bodies adorned everything from Abercrombie bags to the latest film release. The rugged man’s man of our parents generation (think John Wayne or Burt Reynolds even) was replaced with Ken Doll’s like Brad Pitt and Mathew McCaughnahey. The tides changed and with that influence came a mass participation in a culture that demanded we hit the gym and the hair salon – and if you really bought in – the tanning bed too.

So here we are – a bunch of guys in our 30’s and 40’s who have been hitting the gym on a regular basis for 10 or even 20 years with varying results. Whether you look as good as the guy in the latest Pepsi add is irrelevant – you at least look better than your dad did at this age. I can almost guarantee it. There’s just one problem.

With all that pounding away at the gym, your body is bound to be getting tired and chances are that you have already sustained an injury or two. Funny how age will do that. Add to this the fact that with age comes a reduction in testosterone and you’ll also find that the elasticity in your skin and the hardness of your muscles are also starting to show a bit of a … well, droop. Aside from some yet to be proven safe remedies to this issue – there is really one way to battle this inevitable fight with gravity. The answer? Tone up – slim down and get to yoga.

Speaking as an expert in the male body after 30 (insert joke here), my observation tells me that men who are on the bulkier muscly side of things when the droop begins tend to look particularly manboobish and have a much harder time battling that impending relationship with man-spanx. When there’s more bulk to your muscles, its just plain harder to keep them high and tight. Those guys who keep their fitness regimens to more athletic and less weight room oriented routines like tennis, soccer, yoga and pliates tend to look much more spry, elastic and generally sexier than their formally muscle bound counterparts. The added bonus? Activities like Yoga and pilates also help to strengthen your core, legs and balance – all vital ingredients in the quest to aging gracefully.  The double bonus? You will find as an more trim and athletic built guy that clothes and particularly designer clothes will suddenly fit your body like a well tailored glove. Not bad right?

So here’s what I aim to do – and I suggest you do too. Don’t just ditch your routine completely. I am a weight room guy and I like the experience that comes with the daily routine of hitting the gym. Rather than pushing heavier and heavier weight complimented with continuous rounds of protein shakes, opt for workout designed to complete higher amounts of reps at lower weights. This will tone and define muscle without bulking. On off days switch out the weight room with classes like Pilates, TRX and Yoga. Try to mix them up if possible so as to keep your muscles confused and continually challenged. You will find that these activities will not only help you with your overall athleticism but will also allow you to explode more in the weight room when you are there. This more balanced approach to fitness will help keep you looking and feeling young and will do wonders for your style profile. Everyone looks best in a slim fit suit.

Still not convinced? Inspect the following two famous examples. First I give you the formerly muscle bound Mr. Shwarzenegger and his new older and less than bouncy current self. In the second picture is the famously handsome and yet much more subtly athletic Sting. You can decide for yourself which old guy you want to be ;) .

mr. rogers is killing it this spring

Add a little geek chic to your spring style

We can’t all live in the desert, nor would many of us want to. For those that spend their spring in locals that offer a more tempered spring temperature know that while you might walk out your door in your cute new shorts and a polo shirt around noon – by the time that sun rolls down your cursing yourself over your sun-worshiping optimism. It’s time to start bringing some back up.

With that – big bulky sweaters, jackets and the like are just too cumbersome to carry and completely hide whatever spring/summer style you were trying achieve. Instead go for a light weight cardigan (a la Mr. Roger’s) in a simple neutral like Dark grey or brown and sport it open so that it frames and drapes your ensemble rather than completely taking over. Not only will you be happy with the extra warmth, but you will love its easy portability and the fact that it’s subtle and sophisticated style will take you from day to night without having to stop the party with a pit stop at home to change. See some of my faves below.

The Statement Cuff

The statement necklace has had it’s moment in the spotlight long enough. Don’t get us wrong, we will Always love a killer necklace. However, for right now, we’re all about the statement Cuff. The arm party needs to step aside and make room for one incredible (and usually incredibly large) wrist cuff.

an aerial view of your shorts

Orlebar Brown takes your style to new heights

I have blogged about Gray Malin before as his aerial photography – particularly of surf culture and beaches – I find completely inspiring and striking. Every day scenes like a crowd of surfers gathering to catch the next barrel in the ocean appears like a gothis painting when captured from thousands of feet in the air. His work is truly unique and completely captures what is fun and beautiful about surf culture.

Turns out that I’m not the only fan of Malin’s as Swimwear great Orlebar Brown recently enlisted the artists/photographer on a collaboration for their latest collection. The result is this ridiculously cool take on OB’s classic Bulldog Trunks now being sold in limited edition for $345.00. It’s like art for your hard earned donkey booty. Got to say – I love them. Get yours before they are gone HERE.

short and sweet

cut it off at the elbo this spring

As with most things – the Japanese are way ahead of the game. Accustomed to muggy weather, crowded subways and city streets and a general hussle and bussle that few americans would ever know, the Japanese have long had to find a way to dress business appropriate while not completely overheating in the grind of daily life. With that interest in mind came the decades long trend of sporting short sleeve dress shirts as part of their traditional business suit.

I have to say that at first I scoffed at this idea associating it with the less than stylish IT drones in the American work place. The shortsleave shirt was almost always a beige color and fit a body profile akin to a country bear. We’re talking wide and loose in every way. It just wasn’t cute.

Cut to the opening of the first Uniqlo store in the US – right in San Francisco’s Union square, and the release of its latest line of short sleeve men’s dress shirts at prices that will really make you a fan. What’s best is that their offering is a sophisticated garment that is fitted in a tailored look that cinches at the waist and hugs just a bit at the chest. The look is clean, modern and professional. I recommend these shirts in two ways. Option one- rock it as a great business casual look tucked into a pair of cotton chinos worn with loafers and a matching belt. Option two – do as the Japanese do and sport it as part of a full on suit. The short sleeve and tie look will likely get you some raised eyebrows, but if you are the type to put your coat on while spending time with clients anyway – your comfort while sitting at your desk will be well worth it. Try this with a chino suit as opposed to a whool suit for a more seamless and casual look. Get yours HERE.
